Figures have estimated the UK’s population will rise from 60.9 million to 77 million by 2060.
The European Commission has published estimates on population growth across its member states.
- Britain’s population will overtake Germany and France as the most populous country in Europe
- The growth will represent a 25% increase
- Key services such as the NHS will be put under increasing pressure
It is expected 1 in 3 Europeans will be aged over 65 by 2060 and the Commission has expressed deep concerns of the economic impact this aging demographic will have on its member states. In Britain, figures are already showing there are more pensioners than children. With this aging population, the burden on an already stretched pension system could result in catastrophic consequences.
With immigration seen as the biggest factor in readdressing this balance, the UK is expected to be better equipped compared to other countries due to strong population growth.
In Scala’s opinion
- Massive population growth of 25% means huge demand for new housing and new housing requires land suitable for development.
- A stretched pension system means people will look for alternative investments for their future
